Department of construction and geomechanics

The head of the Department is Oleksandr Myckolayovych Shashenko, mining engineer-constructor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor. Honored Scientist and Engineer of Ukraine, State Laureate of Ukraine in the field of Science and Engineering. Author of Scientific discovery in the field of Mining.

The Department was founded in 1944 for training mining engineers in the field of mining enterprises construction and underground civil purpose objects.

At present at the Department students are taught according to direction “Mining”, specialty “Mining and underground construction”, specializations:

• Underground city constructions
  
• Construction and reconstruction of mining enterprises;
  
• Construction of highways and tunnels”.
  

Levels of training: bachelor, specialist, master.

Educational process is provided by 5 doctors of technical science, professors, 12 candidates of science, associate professors. At the Department there totally work 40 staff-members, including researchers and personnel.

At the department there functions a post-graduate course on following specialties:

• Mining and Underground Construction;
  
• Rock and Ground Mechanics.
  

Main directions of the department’s scientific work:

• mining developments construction technology;
  
• geomechanics, including dynamic displays of mining pressure;
  
• mining rock physics.
